Alberto Sarmiento, Executive Chef at La Reserva Club, Sotogrande, guides us through a selection of his favourite terrace restaurants in and around Sotogrande. “As a chef, I believe the setting is the final ingredient of any dish.”
When you think of terrace restaurants in Andalucía, you see tall palms swaying above sun-dappled tables, while cascades of bougainvillea spill over whitewashed terraces in vivid bursts of colour. The atmosphere is relaxed and imbued with Andalucia’s fabulous food, warm hospitality and stunning surroundings: long lunches melting into golden-hour dinners, the gentle clink of crystal glasses, and gentle sea breezes carrying the joysof laughter and lively conversation.
Menus showcase the finest regional ingredients — a myriad of seafood, superb extra-virgin olive oil, and intensely flavoured vegetables — presented simply so that their natural flavours shine. Terrace dining is less about formality and more about an experience that engages all your senses; it is the art of Mediterranean living.
Marxa: Embers, Beats and Endless Summer Nights
Marxa Chiringuito, is one of Sotogrande’s most irresistible terrace restaurants. Set entirely under soft, welcoming shade, the vibrant terrace blends natural materials, bold textiles and relaxed lounge corners, creating an atmosphere that feels both effortless and electric. Artistically, one element commands attention within the restaurant’s colourful décor: Mónica, the emblematic giraffe created by renowned urban artist D. Darko. Bold, playful and instantly recognisable, she stands as a striking artistic centrepiece — a symbol of Marxa’s vibrant identity and joyful summer soul.
The soul of Marxa is its spectacular five-metre grill, fuelled by lemon and orange wood, which perfumes the air with seductive smoky aromas. The menu revolves around fire: premium meats, fresh fish and carefully sourced local produce, all treated with elegant simplicity to enhance their authentic flavours. Each dish carries the unmistakable imprint of the embers — honest, generous and full of character. For dessert, indulgence takes centre stage with “Churros served with dulce de leche”, as well as “Grilled pineapple paired with coconut ice cream” — a tropical finale that perfectly captures the spirit of summer.
As darkness falls, the energy rises. The resident DJ sets the tone with Afro and tropical house beats, transforming dinner into a lively late-night gathering where music, laughter and rhythm merge effortlessly. Marxa, it is a space designed for long dinners, spontaneous toasts and conversations that stretch late into the night.

Hincha & Tribuna Rooftop: a dual-level marina experience
Located within the MiM Hotel Sotogrande, part of the Meliá Collection, this new establishment is linked to Lionel Messi and Michelin-starred chef Nandu Jubany. It offers two distinct dining spaces with panoramic terraces overlooking the marina.
Hincha, downstairs, features an upscale terrace with front-row views of elegant yachts and pastel port façades. Perfect for people-watching, relaxed lunches, or sunset drinks, the menu combines hearty comfort with refinement: hand-carved Iberian ham, artisanal sourdough pizzas, premium Wagyu, and the witty Ballon d’Or dessert.
The new kid on the block is the sophisticated Tribuna Rooftop terrace. Dressed in classic nautical blue and white with maritime-inspired décor and plush seating, it feels effortlessly chic. There’s an infinity plunge pool and sunbeds for hotel guests, but non-residents are welcome — indeed encouraged — to dine here.
From Tribuna, the views stretch across the Mediterranean towards Gibraltar and the African coastline, with yachts glittering below. It’s intimate and atmospheric, perfect for sunset cocktails or alfresco dinners. Highlights include Jubany’s famous croquettes and the indulgent lobster roll with white prawns. Stylish, scenic, and distinctly glamorous, the Tribuna rooftop offers one of the marina’s most Instagram-worthy dining experiences.
Malva Beach Bar: contemporary coastal dining in Estepona
Malva Beach Bar, formerly Palm Beach, has transformed Estepona’s beachfront into a boho-chic unmissable location. Located on Playa de la Rada, with views to the port lighthouse, the beach bar features sunbeds and Balinese daybeds adorned with soft cushions and tropical grass sunshades, offering a stylish backdrop for a long, lazy day or an impromptu sundowner.
The menu blends refined technique with beachside comfort: brioche de solomillo y trufa (pork and truffle), mini octopus and avocado burgers, and classic clams in white wine, alongside indulgent options like tempura prawns and 600g cowboy steaks. Desserts include sweet toffee rice pudding and fresh fruity sorbets. A dedicated cocktail bar serves classic and creative drinks, making it perfect for sun-soaked afternoons and evening relaxation.
Malva is family-friendly yet undeniably chic, epitomising modern Estepona’s verve and glamour. Adding to its allure is the venue’s pop-culture legacy: formerly known as Palm Beach, it was the original filming location for the music video that launched the global 2002 hit The Ketchup Song (Aserejé) by Las Ketchup.
La Bulla Gastrobar: The buzz of Estepona
La Bulla — “the buzz” — on Plaza Ortiz, Estepona, is a modern gastrobar combining Asian fusion cuisine with an exceptional gin selection. Two terraces offer contrasting vibes: one overlooking the lively seafront, the other nestled in the charming plaza.
From the moment you step inside La Bulla Gastrobar, you can feel the infectious energy of the dynamic waiters as they move from table to kitchen with smooth efficiency, smartly dressed in black shirts adorned with tropical touches such as hibiscus flowers. It remains one of my personal favourites for its high-energy atmosphere, combined with real culinary precision.
The tapas menu is playful and inventive: highlights include the deconstructed Spanish tortilla with spicy chorizo, and the avocado cannelloni filled with tuna, served with herb oil, green apple slices, and edible flowers. These small plates are as visually striking as they are flavourful.
If you love the highest-quality tuna, this is paradise: try the atún de almadraba, exquisite bluefin tuna caught sustainably off this coast. If you come for the buzz, you will certainly find it here — but do not leave without trying their legendary dessert: the plate of seven textures of chocolate. This indulgent finale includes chocolate mousse, ganache, truffle, chocolate syrup, white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate ice cream, and more—a fittingly decadent ending to an already outstanding experience.
The Hurricane Hotel Terrace: Sunset dining in Tarifa
Set amid the lush gardens and deep blue pool of the much-loved Hurricane Hotel, and with the Atlantic peeping through the mature palms, this terrace is a magnet for those in the know. Tall arches and palms swaying in the ocean breeze create an effortlessly elegant backdrop, while curated music drifts through the air and flickering oil lamps cast a warm, artistic glow — setting a relaxed, bohemian mood.
The crowd here feels like family: multi-generational surfers, returning holidaymakers, and locals who are intimately acquainted with every secret corner of this legendary spot. Most of the waiters have known their guests for years, adding a welcoming, personal touch. Begin with fresh local breads and garlicky allioli, then move on to foie gras with Pedro Ximénez sherry, the catch of the day either grilled, barbecued, or baked in sea salt, or the charcoal-kissed retinto beef entrecôte with chimichurri. Finish with the terrace’s decadent chocolate brownie, rich and unforgettable.
Dining on this garden terrace is more than a meal—it’s a social ritual, a shared experience where generations mingle, laughter drifts on the sea breeze, and great food and conversation stretch into the early hours.
