Meticulously manicured fields, ponies primed to perfection and daring riders displaying skill and finesse: it can only be the polo season, the months when Sotogrande’s fields beat to the sound of thundering hooves and mallet on ball. Adept horsemanship and supreme teamwork make the high-goal sporting action exhilarating but off-field too, there’s an elegance and glamour that ensures this so-called ‘sport of kings’ is one of the year’s hottest tickets.
When Enrique Zobel, a prominent Filipino businessman and nephew of Sotogrande’s founders, laid out the first polo field in 1965, he could not have foreseen the heritage he was building. His own lifelong passion for the sport gave birth to an internationally prized polo destination, one that welcomes an international elite to both play and party.
Today, 56 years on, the height of the polo season in August sees close to forty teams, 1000 horses and 100,000 visitors assemble at Sotogrande. European royalty and the international jet set party in style, reveling in the sophisticated but ever discreet atmosphere and as cold drinks are served, they enjoy world-class polo in an idyllic setting.
For families of all ages, this is a social event to relish. There’s the magnificence of the ponies – their tight turns and electric speed – and the athleticism and courage of the riders, but also the camaraderie and community that polo offers. So take a seat under a shaded canopy, order an ice-cold drink, and experience the breath-taking drama of polo at Sotogrande.

Two principal polo clubs form the heart of Sotogrande: Santa Maria and Ayala. Santa Maria Polo Club, described as the “Wimbledon of polo pitches”, is acknowledged as one of only four premier polo venues worldwide, 15-hectares of beautifully maintained grounds devoted to polo and elite events. It hosts over 40 tournaments each year and four of its seven polo grounds are designated world-class.
This is the venue for The Grand Slam International Polo Tournament, a five-week sporting tournament of the highest calibre, now celebrating its 50th anniversary. It’s also a social extravaganza, the high-glamour event of Andalucía’s summer season, when the great and good come for musical evenings, culture, art and gastronomy.
Ayala Polo Club in San Roque links directly to Enrique Zobel’s heritage and is owned by his son Iñigo, providing more high-quality facilities. Sit beside the peaceful polo fields on a summer’s evening, dine at exclusive Cancha II, Paola Zobel’s much-praised restaurant, and experience majestic Sotogrande at its finest.
Ten minutes away beside the Guadiaro River, Polo Valley was established in 2015 to celebrate a love of horses. Today it has 150 stables and three polo fields and offers short treks through the Andalucían countryside right up to intensive residential courses, coaching absolute beginners up to experienced players in the finer points of polo.
As the home of elite European polo, Sotogrande’s reputation is assured, both on the pitch and among its growing number of international spectators.
