A look back on the 2023 Estrella Damm Andalucia Masters in Sotogrande

It’s been a week since Sotogrande welcomed the DP World Tour’s 2023 Estrella Damm Andalucia Masters to its shores, and we wanted to take a moment to look back at the fantastic tournament held at Sotogrande’s first golf club, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.

As the European Tour made its return to Sotogrande, fans gathered in large numbers to witness some of the world’s best golfers competing under the Spanish sun. With players like US Open champion, Wyndham Clark, Matt Kuchar, previous winner of the event, Adrian Otaegui, and a number of other world-renowned players in the lineup, the spectators were treated to some incredible golfing action.

At the start of the week, Mother Nature challenged us with rain and strong winds of up to 40mph (uncharacteristic for this part of the world, which regularly sees more than 300 days of sunshine per year). For the safety of the spectators, the course had to closed to the public on Thursday afternoon, leaving the first round to be completed without an audience.

Despite the extremely testing conditions, England’s James Morrison navigated the course expertly, and carded a remarkable round on eight under par.

As the week progressed, several players posted low scores, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the historic tournament. The championship was ultimately decided on the final day, with the eventual champion securing victory by just one stroke.

Poland’s Adrian Meronk delivered an impressive Sunday performance, carding a fantastic round of 66, which included two eagles, on route to securing his fourth DP World Tour victory. Following the disappointment of not being selected for the Ryder Cup in September, Meronk showcased his class and talent by holing out from the fairway on the ninth, and sinking multiple 30-foot putts during his final round. This victory also propels Meronk up to third place in the Race to Dubai standings, putting him in a strong position to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2024 season.

It was a magical week on the shores of Sotogrande, and it was fantastic to see the local community come out in droves to attend this storied event. Congratulations to Adrian on his well-deserved win, and huge thanks to all the dedicated staff and volunteers who put on such a wonderful event.
