World Oceans Day

On June 9th, 2025, we celebrated World Oceans Day, and here in Sotogrande, we proudly did our part.

Over 100 volunteers, including families, local groups, and businesses, showed up all ready to give back to the sea that gives us so much. From the first light of day, people of all ages joined forces to clear away plastics, cans, and other harmful waste from the shore and seabed. By the end of the day, we had removed nearly 500 kilos of waste products.

This incredible effort came together thanks to the teamwork of Sotogrande S.A., the Port of Sotogrande, the Navega Foundation, and the Royal Maritime Club of Sotogrande, with strong support from the San Roque City Council.

It’s all part of a bigger picture: a long-term sustainability plan that’s been growing over the years, built on protecting the environment and promoting cleaner ways of living. From initiatives like using treated water to investing in renewable energy, these local efforts are helping shape a sustainable future.

“S for Sustainable Tourism” recognition

And there’s more to celebrate Puerto Sotogrande S.A. has once again earned the “Blue Flag” certification and also received the “S for Sustainable Tourism” recognition from the Institute for Spanish and Sustainable Tourism Quality. It’s a proud reminder that real progress is happening right here in our community.

One standout moment from the cleanup came thanks to Scuba Course Spain and Typical Alternative, who provided a floating platform that made collecting waste from the Barbesula dock much easier. It was a great example of creativity and collaboration in action.

Laughter and Joy at the Marina

But the day wasn’t just about work; it was about connection. After the cleanup, the Royal Maritime Club came alive with joy. Laughter filled the Marina as participants had the opportunity to paint, join nautical adventures, and more, thanks to local associations like Q Sistema, Alavela Yachting, Sotojet, We Whale, Jugarnia, Mosayko, and RCMS, who brought energy, ideas, and inspiration to the day’s events.

As the sun began to set, one final moment brought everyone together: the public reading of the Manifesto for the Protection of the Oceans, followed by a moment of gratitude for everyone’s participation.

These moments remind us that change starts with simple things — a neighbor lending a hand, friends showing up, families standing together — and that is when real progress begins. When we come together, we start to create the change we all want to see.
