The Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande is probably the most well-known polo club in Spain, achieving international acclaim as one of the best clubs in the world, widely recognised for its sporting excellence, exclusivity and glamour. It was the first polo facility in Sotogrande, built in the 1960s. Since those early years, it has been steadily improving and developing both its physical facilities and also its reputation.

After an unprecedented year of lockdowns and regulations as a result of the global pandemic and the resultant disruptions to the world polo season, summer 2021 brings with it a long-awaited relaxation of infection control restrictions. This timely return to normality coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament.

This International Polo Tournament 2021 is special for more than just marking 50 years of polo in Sotogrande. An annual Grand Slam event attracting the world’s top riders and their superb horses, this year’s International Polo Tournament will not only be marked by the return of the High Handicap competition, but it will also coincide with the union of the three great polo clubs of Sotogrande: Ayala, Dos Lunas and Santa Maria. There will also be a Medium and Low handicap competition spread out over the 34 days of the Tournament, and the prizes will be handed out in the three traditional trophies of bronze, silver and gold cups.

This year’s 50th Anniversary International Polo Tournament is expected to prove an irresistible draw to teams from across the world including the French team, Sainte Mesme, which returns once again to the Sotogrande fields. Of particular mention, is the fact that even the Argentinian champion rider, Adolfo Cambiaso, ranked number one polo player in the world, is expected to return to play in Sotogrande after five years of absence.

Besides the return of Adolfo Cambiaso to Sotogrande, there are other prominent players expected to participate in the Tournament, players such as Juan Martin Nero, who will be playing in the Ayala team and Guillermo “Sapo” Caset in the Marqués de Risco team. The Dos Lunas team will be boasting the presence of Pascual Sainz de Vicuña and Joaquín Pittaluga.

As well as world class horsemanship atop the best polo horses in the world, spectators can expect to be in for a treat throughout each day of the Tournament. There will be superb displays of sporting skills on the polo fields and the International Polo Tournament will also be providing a wide range of leisure activities that will appeal to all members of the audience, young and not so young alike.

This 50th Anniversary special edition of the Santa Maria Polo Club’s International Polo Tournament will be free to spectators across the three venues that will serve as hosts to the event. With an atmosphere of electric excitement, the best polo matches in the world will be played across superbly maintained polo fields, international stars will be performing at their best providing the perfect showcase of breath-taking riding skills, and the thrills of the competition will captivate spectators.

As if that were not enough, there will also be a shopping area featuring some of the world’s best-known brands, luxury properties being showcased and refreshments available at an excellent bar area where spectators can take a break and enjoy drinks and snacks with friends. And for the younger members of the family, there will be kids’ club facilities available, so that they can relax and have fun away from the intensity of the matches.

The Santa Maria International Polo Club at Sotogrande already has several polo fields classified as World Class competition standard fields, and the facilities at the Club are dedicated to providing top quality hospitality, not just at international competitive events, but throughout the year for private and corporate events. This, set with a backdrop of the spectacular Andalucian landscape and with over a million square meters of landscaped areas, makes the Santa Maria International Polo Tournament a standout event in the world polo season calendar.
